St. Louis, MO (January 9, 2026) – A rear-end collision along northbound Interstate 170, just south of the I-70 interchange, resulted in two individuals being hospitalized on Thursday morning following a chain reaction caused by traffic congestion.
The incident occurred around 8:05 a.m. when a 2024 Freightliner traveling northbound began braking due to slowed traffic ahead. A 2016 Kia Forte, also heading north, was unable to stop in time and collided with the rear of the Freightliner’s towed unit. The Kia sustained extensive damage and required towing from the scene, while the Freightliner was driven away with minor damage.
Responders from the Northeast Fire Protection District arrived quickly and provided aid to the injured parties. The 57-year-old male driver of the Kia, as well as his 21-year-old female passenger, both from St. Louis, were transported to Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The man was reported to have moderate injuries, while the woman suffered minor injuries.
Authorities from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, including Tpr. J.M. Doyle conducted the investigation. Initial findings indicate that the crash was prompted by sudden braking amid heavy traffic, leading to a failure to stop in time by the second vehicle.
Crews worked to manage traffic and clear the scene following the crash. No further details have been released regarding citations or contributing factors beyond congestion.
We extend our best wishes to those recovering from injuries in this unfortunate incident.
