Sumter Co, FL (January 11, 2026) – A devastating traffic collision on Friday night in Sumter County claimed the lives of two people after a golf cart was struck by a passenger vehicle at a busy intersection along US-27.
The crash occurred on January 9 at approximately 9:35 p.m. at the intersection of US-27 and County Road 109. Emergency responders from Sumter County arrived at the scene to find a golf cart and a passenger vehicle that had collided within the intersection. Fire rescue crews and emergency medical services worked quickly to provide care to those involved.
According to initial reports, the golf cart entered the intersection while traveling westbound on County Road 109 and was struck by a southbound Kia Soul on US-27. The impact caused the golf cart to overturn before coming to rest near the southwest corner of the intersection. Both occupants of the golf cart, a 64-year-old man from Lady Lake and a 58-year-old woman from The Villages, sustained critical injuries.
Paramedics transported both individuals to a local hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries. Authorities confirmed that both victims died as a result of trauma sustained in the crash.
The driver of the Kia, a 23-year-old woman from Eustis, and a 1-year-old boy traveling in the vehicle were taken to an area hospital with a variety of injuries described as minor. A third passenger in the Kia, a 19-year-old man from Belleview, was evaluated at the scene and did not require hospitalization.
Traffic in the area was impacted for an extended period as emergency personnel secured the scene and investigators began documenting evidence. The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
