Sunderland, MD (February 24, 2026) – A deadly crash claimed two lives on Sunday afternoon, February 22, after a falling tree struck a vehicle in Sunderland. The collision occurred around 4:44 p.m. on North Solomons Island Road, also known as Route 2, near Aspen Wood Drive.

Authorities said a vehicle traveling northbound was hit by a tree that fell into the roadway, and three people were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. The driver was Michael Lee Simpson, 60, of Deale, and the front passenger was Virginia Marie Quesenberry, 43, of Chesapeake Beach.

A rear passenger, James Randall Detoto Sr., 62, was also inside the vehicle. All three occupants were found trapped inside the wreckage when emergency units arrived, while Simpson and Quesenberry were pronounced dead at the scene.

Detoto was removed from the vehicle and taken to a local trauma center with critical injuries. No other vehicles were reported to be involved in the incident.

The incident remains under review by authorities.

We extend our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and we extend our best wishes for a full recovery to those injured in this accident.

How Falling Objects Can Lead to Severe Roadway Accidents

Crashes caused by falling trees or debris are uncommon but can be extremely dangerous. These incidents often happen suddenly, leaving drivers with little time to react or avoid impact.

Weather conditions, soil saturation, and tree health can all contribute to trees entering roadways. Even without severe storms, weakened trees may fall unexpectedly.

When a vehicle is struck from above or the side, damage can be extensive. Entrapment is more likely, especially if the roof or doors are compromised.

Emergency responses to these crashes can be complex. Crews must stabilize the scene and safely remove occupants while managing risks posed by nearby falling debris.
