Lubbock, TX (August 11, 2026) – A pedestrian crash near University Avenue and 66th Street in central Lubbock claimed the life of a 40-year-old woman after she was struck by an SUV while crossing the road on Sunday, August 9.
Investigators said Crystal Vela was crossing University Avenue when she was struck by an SUV driven by 39-year-old Brian Rodriguez. Vela was taken to UMC with serious injuries and later died. Rodriguez was arrested and booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
Police said there is not enough evidence at this time to charge Rodriguez in connection with Vela’s death. Additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues. Our sincere condolences go out to Crystal Vela’s family and loved ones.
What Can Increase the Risk of Pedestrian Crashes at Night?
Pedestrians can be harder for drivers to see after dark, particularly on roads with heavy traffic or limited lighting. Crossing outside a marked crossing area can also place pedestrians in the path of moving vehicles.
Investigators may review roadway lighting, traffic signals, vehicle speed, visibility, and the pedestrian’s location when determining how a crash occurred. Vehicle damage and available surveillance footage can provide additional information about the point of impact and the sequence of events.
