York, PA (August 5, 2026) – A 14-year-old boy on a bicycle was struck by a vehicle on Monday evening, August 3, near Vitos Pizza and Beer on South Queen Street in Spring Garden Township, just south of York. It happened around 7:28 p.m. near the cross streets of Greendale Road and Tri Hill Road.

Emergency crews, including a medic unit, responded to the scene to evaluate and treat the boy. No further details about the extent of his injuries were immediately available. The cause of the collision was not immediately known.

We hope for a full recovery for the boy.

Why Are Evening Hours Riskier for Young Bicyclists?

Evening hours can be a particularly risky time for young bicyclists, especially as summer daylight begins to fade. A driver’s eyes take time to adjust to changing light conditions, and a bicycle’s smaller profile can be harder to spot against a busy commercial street than a car or pedestrian.

Areas near restaurants and shopping plazas see frequent turning traffic, as drivers pull in and out of parking lots and driveways throughout the evening. A cyclist riding along the roadway or crossing a driveway entrance can be easy to overlook if a driver is focused on finding a parking spot or checking for oncoming cars.

Reflective clothing, bike lights, and riding predictably in the same direction as traffic can all help young riders stay more visible to drivers. Parents and caregivers can also help by reviewing basic bike safety rules, including which side of the road to ride on and how to signal turns clearly.
