Spring Hill, KS (June 18, 2026) – A 15-year-old driver was seriously hurt in a crash involving a semi-truck at the intersection of Hwy 169 and 199th St in Spring Hill on Tuesday, June 16.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 10:50 p.m. Investigators said the teen was driving a 2025 Ford F-250 southbound and had been in a turn lane preparing to travel east on 199th St.

Troopers reported that the pickup entered the intersection against a red light and was struck by a northbound 2025 Freightliner semi-truck. The force of the collision pushed the pickup into a ditch and caused the semi to overturn onto its driver’s side.

The 15-year-old driver from Spring Hill and a 16-year-old passenger from Olathe both sustained serious injuries. Authorities said three people were seriously hurt in the crash, though additional information regarding the third injured person was not immediately released. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances that led to the collision and are reviewing all available evidence.

We are keeping those injured in our thoughts and wishing them strength during their recovery.

How Traffic Signal Violations Contribute to Serious Intersection Crashes?

Intersections are designed to control the movement of vehicles traveling in different directions. When a driver enters an intersection against a traffic signal, other motorists may have little time to react. This can increase the likelihood of severe crashes, particularly on highways where vehicles travel at higher speeds.

Large commercial trucks present additional challenges during emergency maneuvers because of their size and weight. When a truck is struck or forced to change direction suddenly, the risk of overturning can increase. These situations may lead to extensive vehicle damage and serious injuries for multiple people.

Investigators reviewing intersection accidents examine signal timing, vehicle movements, roadway evidence, and witness accounts. Information gathered from the roadway can help establish how the collision occurred and whether traffic control devices were being followed before the crash took place.
