Corning, WI (July 28, 2026) – A 17-year-old girl from Merrill suffered critical injuries and was transported to the hospital after a two-car collision on WI-64 near Elm Grove Road in the Town of Corning.

The Lincoln County 911 Center received the crash report on Sunday, July 26. Preliminary findings indicate the teen was driving eastbound when her vehicle crossed into the westbound lane and collided with another car. Emergency units responded to the scene, and the teen was flown by medical helicopter to Marshfield Hospital with critical injuries.

The teen’s 2-week-old son was also in the vehicle. Officials said the infant was properly secured in a child safety seat and was not hurt. The second vehicle was occupied by a 60-year-old man and his 56-year-old wife, both from Jim Falls. They were treated for minor injuries following the collision.

Authorities are still investigating the crash, and additional details will be released as they become available.

We are keeping the injured in our thoughts as they receive medical care.

How Child Safety Seats Help Protect Infants During Serious Crashes

Infants ride safest when secured in a properly installed rear-facing child safety seat that is appropriate for their size and age. These seats are designed to spread crash forces across the strongest parts of a baby’s body while supporting the head, neck, and spine during an impact. Correct installation and proper harness use can greatly reduce the risk of serious injury.

Crash investigators may review whether child restraints were installed and used correctly as part of documenting the collision. Vehicle damage, impact direction, and seating positions also provide helpful information about how occupants were affected. These details contribute to a better understanding of the crash while highlighting the value of using approved child restraints for every trip.
