Queens, NY (July 31, 2026) — Two 14-year-old boys riding a motorized scooter were taken into custody after the scooter collided with a marked police vehicle in Queens on Thursday, July 30, according to police. It happened around 7:30 p.m. at 101st Street and Northern Boulevard.

The police vehicle was headed east on Northern Boulevard, while the scooter was headed west, when the two came together, according to police.

The two boys were taken to Elmhurst Hospital and remained in police custody. Two officers in the vehicle were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, though their conditions were not immediately known.

A source told a local news outlet that the scooter had been involved in an earlier incident, though further details were not available.

The investigation remained ongoing as this report was filed. We hope everyone involved recovers fully.

Why Marked Vehicles Don’t Always Stand Out in Traffic

A marked patrol vehicle doesn’t automatically stand out in traffic the way people might expect. Without emergency lights or a siren active, it moves through an intersection the same way any other car would, and a driver or rider glancing quickly in its direction may not register anything unusual about it at all.

This becomes especially relevant at busy intersections, where several vehicles may be approaching from different directions at once. A quick visual scan focused on obviously larger or faster-moving vehicles can miss a patrol car traveling at a normal pace, particularly in low light conditions like dusk or after dark.

Because of this, treating every vehicle at an intersection with the same level of caution, regardless of markings, remains one of the safest habits for both drivers and riders. Waiting for a clear, confirmed gap before proceeding, rather than assuming a marked vehicle will yield or behave predictably, helps reduce the chance of a sudden, unexpected meeting point between two vehicles.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
