Lake Geneva, WI (July 5, 2026) – Three children were killed after a severe storm capsized a recreational boat on Geneva Lake on Friday afternoon, according to authorities.
Officials said the privately owned motorboat was carrying six adults and four children when severe weather moved across Geneva Lake at approximately 12:10 p.m. on July 3. As high winds and large waves intensified, the boaters attempted to reach safety but were unable to overcome the conditions. The vessel capsized and later sank.
Emergency responders quickly rescued all six adults and one child from the water. However, three children remained missing, prompting an intensive search by multiple rescue agencies. The children were eventually located, and lifesaving measures were performed both at the scene and while they were being transported to a hospital. Despite those efforts, all three children were pronounced dead.
Authorities said all of the children had been wearing life jackets at the time of the incident. Officials also reported that numerous people suffered storm-related injuries elsewhere in the area, placing additional demands on local hospitals during the emergency response.
The victims are believed to have been younger than 13 years old, although authorities have not yet released their identities. The Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources continue to investigate the incident.
