What Can Increase the Risk of Multi-Vehicle Collisions?
Multi-vehicle collisions can occur when one vehicle strikes another, and the sequence continues into nearby traffic. Intersections can be particularly challenging because vehicles may approach from several directions at the same time.
Driver attention, speed, following distance, visibility, and traffic volume can all affect how quickly motorists react. A sudden stop or unexpected movement can leave following drivers with limited time to avoid a collision.
Seat belts can reduce the risk of serious harm by helping keep occupants inside their vehicles during a collision. Drivers can also reduce risk by maintaining safe speeds, leaving adequate following distance, and watching carefully for vehicles approaching from other directions.
