What Causes Chain-Reaction Crashes on Busy Highways?
Chain-reaction collisions often occur when drivers have limited time to react to an unexpected hazard, such as a disabled or stalled vehicle in a travel lane. Heavy traffic, reduced following distances, and sudden braking can increase the likelihood of multiple vehicles becoming involved.
Investigators typically examine vehicle positions, driver actions, traffic conditions, and roadway evidence to determine how the sequence of impacts unfolded. They may also review whether emergency flashers were activated, how long a disabled vehicle was present in the roadway, and whether visibility or traffic flow contributed to the crash. These factors help establish the events leading up to a multi-vehicle collision.
