Tijeras, NM (February 25, 2026) – A sheriff’s deputy was killed Monday evening after being struck by a semi-truck while conducting a traffic stop on I-40 near mile marker 170 in Tijeras. Emergency units responded to the westbound lanes near Carnuel after the crash was reported around 5 p.m.
According to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, Michael Schlattman had exited his patrol vehicle during the stop when a semi-truck struck the rear of his department-issued unit. The force of the collision pinned him underneath the vehicle.
Sgt. Schlattman died at the scene due to his injuries. The crash caused closures in both directions of I-40 for several hours as crews worked at the scene. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
Our condolences go out to the deputy’s family, colleagues, and loved ones.
Why Traffic Stops on Highways Carry Serious Risk
Traffic stops on busy highways expose officers to fast-moving vehicles traveling close to the shoulder. Even when emergency lights are activated, approaching drivers may not slow down or move over in time. This creates a dangerous environment for anyone outside their vehicle.
Large trucks require longer stopping distances and may have limited ability to avoid sudden hazards. Poor visibility, driver distraction, or fatigue can increase the chance of a crash involving stopped vehicles.
Safety practices such as reducing speed and changing lanes when approaching stopped vehicles can help reduce risk. Public awareness and careful driving near roadside stops help protect both officers and drivers.
