What Factors Are Often Considered in Pedestrian Crashes
Pedestrian crashes can occur in many types of road environments, from busy city streets to areas near residential neighborhoods. These incidents often involve vehicles traveling at regular traffic speeds while a person attempts to cross or walk along the roadway.
Several conditions may influence how these crashes happen. Visibility, traffic flow, and roadway design can affect how easily drivers and pedestrians notice each other. Marked crosswalks, traffic signals, and lighting conditions can also affect the level of safety for people on foot.
Vehicle speed can strongly influence the outcome of a pedestrian crash. Even at moderate speeds, serious injuries can occur because pedestrians lack the protection that vehicle occupants have.
