How Residential Fires Can Spread Quickly From Chimneys
Fires that begin in chimneys can spread rapidly to other parts of a home. Creosote buildup inside a chimney can ignite and produce intense heat. Once flames reach nearby structures like walls or porches, the fire can grow quickly.
Wood framing and exterior materials can allow flames to travel along surfaces. Openings such as vents, windows, or gaps in construction may let heat and smoke move inside. This can trap occupants and reduce visibility in a short time.
Smoke inhalation is often one of the most serious risks during a house fire. Even before flames reach living areas, toxic gases can fill the home. Working smoke alarms and regular chimney cleaning can help reduce the chances of these fires and give people more time to get out safely.
