Broome County, NY (August 20, 2026) – Four people were injured on Wednesday in a chain-reaction collision involving a tractor-trailer in an active work zone on I-81 south near Exit 21, south of Barker. It happened around 11:59 a.m., according to troopers.
A preliminary investigation found the tractor-trailer struck a vehicle while traveling through the work zone, pushing it into a third vehicle, troopers said. That vehicle rolled and struck a fourth vehicle.
One occupant from each of the four vehicles was taken to UHS Wilson Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. No workers in the zone were hurt, and none of the equipment or vehicles within the work zone were damaged.
Two dogs, described as a German Shepherd and a poodle-type dog, ran from one of the vehicles after the wreck and were last seen near I-81 and Route 11.
I-81 south was briefly shut down but reopened within several minutes. Environmental crews responded to address a fuel spill from the tractor-trailer, and the case remains under investigation.
