What Factors Are Common in Rear-End Crashes Involving Transit Buses?
Rear-end crashes involving buses often occur when a following driver fails to notice a stopped or slowing vehicle ahead. Differences in vehicle size can also affect visibility, especially when a smaller car is following a large bus.
Speed and distraction are frequent contributing factors. When a driver is not fully focused or is traveling too fast for conditions, the stopping distance may be reduced.
Road layout and lighting conditions can also play a role. In some cases, stopped buses in travel lanes may be less expected by approaching drivers, increasing the risk of impact.
