Tucson, AZ (January 23, 2026) – A pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle while crossing East Speedway Boulevard in Tucson on Saturday night has died from his injuries, according to the Tucson Police Department. The crash occurred around 8:00 p.m. on January 17, near the 3700 block of East Speedway Blvd, between Alvernon Way and Dodge Boulevard.
Authorities say the pedestrian, identified as 59-year-old Walter James Pain, was crossing the six-lane roadway from the north to the south side when he was hit by an eastbound Hyundai sedan traveling in the curb lane. Investigators noted that the man was wearing dark clothing and was not in a marked or unmarked crosswalk at the time of the collision.
Emergency crews from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the scene, and medics transported the victim to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite efforts to save him, the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner confirmed Mr. Pain succumbed to his injuries on January 22.
The driver of the Hyundai remained at the scene and cooperated with the police. Authorities stated there was no indication of impairment, and preliminary findings suggest that jaywalking was a significant factor in the incident.
A section of Speedway Boulevard was closed while police conducted their investigation. The Tucson Police Department is continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Walter James Pain during this difficult time.
