Highlands County, FL (June 17, 2026) – Two people lost their lives and another remains missing after an airboat capsized Monday on the Istokpoga Canal in Highlands County.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, emergency crews responded to a single-vessel incident involving an airboat carrying seven people en route to the Kissimmee River.

Authorities reported that the airboat was traveling through the Istokpoga Canal when it entered a deeper section of water near the river and began taking on water. The vessel subsequently capsized, throwing all seven occupants into the water.

Four individuals were able to safely reach shore following the accident. Emergency responders immediately launched a search operation for the remaining three passengers.

Officials later located two of the missing individuals, who were pronounced dead at the scene. The search for a third missing passenger continued as crews worked the area.

Additional details regarding the identities of those involved have not yet been released. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the airboat capsizing.

The investigation remains ongoing. Our deepest condolences go out to the families, friends, and loved ones of the two victims. We also hope for the safe recovery of the missing passenger.

Why Capsized Vessel Incidents Require Extensive Search Efforts?

Watercraft accidents involving capsized vessels can quickly become life-threatening, particularly when passengers are unexpectedly thrown into the water. Rescue operations depend on factors such as water depth, current conditions, visibility, and the amount of time that has elapsed since the incident occurred.

Investigators examining boating accidents typically review vessel condition, passenger locations, water conditions, weather factors, and operator actions leading up to the event. Determining how and why a vessel began taking on water can be an important part of understanding the cause of the accident.

Search and recovery operations frequently involve multiple agencies working together to locate missing individuals and document evidence. Information gathered during the investigation can help authorities determine contributing factors and improve boating safety awareness.
