Why Pedestrian Fatalities at Intersections Require Detailed Investigation?
Fatal pedestrian crashes involve extensive investigations because authorities must determine the movements of both the pedestrian and the vehicle in the moments before impact. Investigators typically review traffic signal timing, roadway conditions, witness statements, and any available surveillance footage to better understand how the collision occurred.
Even when a pedestrian is within a marked crosswalk, investigators examine factors such as visibility, lighting conditions, vehicle speed, and right-of-way laws. These elements can help establish the sequence of events and identify any contributing circumstances.
Early morning pedestrian collisions can present additional challenges due to reduced visibility and lower traffic volumes. Evidence collected during the investigation helps authorities determine the cause of the crash and may contribute to future roadway safety improvements.
