Why Multi-Vehicle Crashes Often Cause Extended Traffic Disruptions
Multi-vehicle crashes can create significant traffic problems because they frequently involve debris, disabled vehicles, and complex investigations. Even when only a few people are injured, clearing the roadway may take several hours.
Highways near popular destinations, recreational areas, or major landmarks often experience varying traffic volumes throughout the day. Changes in traffic flow, turning movements, and vehicle spacing can contribute to chain-reaction collisions involving multiple vehicles.
After a multi-vehicle crash, investigators typically examine vehicle positions, roadway markings, witness statements, and physical evidence. These findings help determine the sequence of impacts and which factors may have contributed to the collision.
