Arroyo Grande, CA (July 17, 2026) – A secondary traffic accident involving a white Ford Maverick and a white GMC 2500 pickup was reported on Friday afternoon on southbound US-101 at the E Grand Ave off-ramp.

The collision was reported at approximately 5:05 p.m. Both vehicles came to rest in the slow lane, and dispatch records indicated the driver of the GMC reported a hand injury. Later updates classified the collision as involving minor injuries.

The damaged Ford Maverick and GMC 2500 could not be driven from the roadway, and tow trucks were requested to remove both vehicles. Traffic continued to move around the blocked lane while the roadway was being cleared. The identities of those involved were not released.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are still being examined, and additional details may be released as the review continues.

We hope those hurt in the collision make a full and speedy recovery.

What Is a Secondary Traffic Collision?

A secondary traffic collision occurs after an earlier traffic disruption, usually when drivers encounter slowed or stopped vehicles ahead. These crashes may happen because motorists have less time to react to changing traffic conditions.

Investigators typically review the sequence of both collisions, vehicle damage, roadway markings, and available witness accounts to determine how the latter crash developed. Even collisions involving minor injuries can require vehicle removal and temporary lane restrictions, especially when damaged vehicles cannot be safely driven away. Remaining alert, reducing speed near traffic backups, and leaving adequate following distance can help lower the risk of secondary collisions.
