Why Deer Collisions Can Still Cause Serious Injuries

Animal-related crashes often happen suddenly and give drivers very little time to react, especially in rural or wooded areas. Deer are most active at dawn and dusk, increasing the risk of unexpected roadway crossings.

Even when a driver avoids a direct impact with the animal, sudden braking or swerving can lead to loss of control or secondary injuries. Investigators typically review speed, visibility, and roadway conditions when examining these types of crashes. Rural highways like State Route 54 can be especially vulnerable due to limited lighting and frequent wildlife movement near the roadway.
