Why Fires Sometimes Occur After Serious Highway Crashes
Vehicle fires following major roadway collisions can happen for several reasons. Fuel systems, electrical wiring, and engine components may become damaged during a heavy hit, increasing the chance of flames starting shortly afterward. Larger commercial vehicles can also add extra hazards because of their weight and the force involved during contact with smaller vehicles.
Road conditions, speed, visibility, and traffic flow are often reviewed after these types of crashes. Investigators may also examine vehicle damage patterns and debris left on the highway to better understand how the sequence unfolded. In some cases, witness statements and roadway camera footage can provide additional details. Early reports are often limited while more evidence is gathered and reviewed.
