Amarillo, TX (September 2, 2026) – A woman and an 8-year-old child were killed on Monday evening after a Ford pickup rolled on I-27 near Georgia St. The accident happened around 6 p.m. as the pickup and a GMC SUV traveled north.

The police said the Ford changed lanes unsafely and struck the GMC. The SUV then hit the concrete center median, lost control, and stopped in the grassy median between the northbound main lanes and frontage road.

The Ford also lost control and rolled, ejecting its two adults and the child. Alma Yazmin Peregrino Rivas, 41, died at the scene, while the child was taken to a hospital and later died from injuries related to the accident.

A 34-year-old man from the Ford was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries before being flown to Lubbock for further treatment. The SUV driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation into the fatal collision remains ongoing.

Our condolences go to the families of those who died, and we hope the injured drivers recover.

How Rollover Crashes Can Cause Severe Injuries

Rollover crashes can create significant risks because occupants may move violently inside a vehicle during repeated changes in direction. Ejection from a vehicle can greatly increase the potential for severe or fatal injuries.

Seat belts are especially important during rollovers because they help keep occupants inside the passenger compartment. Proper restraint use can also limit movement during sudden vehicle rotations.

Vehicle stability can be affected by speed, steering movements, road conditions, and the interaction between vehicles. Drivers should maintain a safe speed, avoid abrupt maneuvers, and remain attentive to surrounding traffic to reduce the risk of losing control.
