Norfolk, VA (August 8, 2026) – Two people were killed early on Friday morning after a vehicle ran off the road, struck a tree, and caught fire at Granby St and Beverly Ave. Officers were called to the intersection at about 3:15 a.m.
Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. The police later determined the vehicle had been involved in an earlier pursuit with Norfolk officers, which was terminated after officers lost contact with it.
A short time later, 911 received a report of a vehicle striking a tree at the intersection. Detectives said the preliminary investigation indicates speed may have contributed to the accident.
The identities of the two people who died have not been released. Granby St was temporarily closed while emergency units worked at the site, but all lanes had reopened by 10:45 a.m.
The investigation remains ongoing, and our condolences go to the families and loved ones of those who died.
