How Lane-Blocking Crashes Affect Freeway Traffic
Even relatively minor freeway collisions can cause significant congestion when they block travel lanes. Crashes in express lanes or elevated roadway sections usually require specialized traffic control while emergency responders assist those involved, remove damaged vehicles, and clear debris from the roadway.
Investigators typically examine vehicle damage, roadway evidence, witness statements, and traffic conditions to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision. Motorists approaching active crash scenes should reduce speed, remain alert, and move over when it is safe to do so to protect emergency personnel and other drivers.
