Plant City, FL (June 21, 2026) – Two women lost their lives, and two others were hurt in a three-vehicle crash that occurred on Friday afternoon at the intersection of State Route 60 and North Turkey Creek Road in Plant City.

State troopers said the collision happened at about 12:50 p.m. on June 19. A 59-year-old Plant City woman was driving a Chevy Cobalt north on North Turkey Creek Road when she entered the intersection against a red traffic signal. The car moved into the path of an eastbound Dodge Journey operated by a 71-year-old Sebring woman.

The Dodge struck the side of the Chevy, causing both vehicles to spin across the roadway. The impact pushed the Chevy into the northeast corner of the intersection, where it crashed into a shed. The Dodge then continued northeast and collided with a Kia K5 driven by a 20-year-old Plant City woman. The Kia had been stopped in a westbound left-turn lane waiting at the intersection.

The Chevy driver and her 59-year-old passenger from Dover suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of the Dodge and Kia were reported to have minor injuries.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

How Traffic Signal Violations Can Lead to Serious Intersection Crashes

Intersections are among the most common locations for serious traffic accidents. Drivers approaching a signalized intersection must watch for traffic lights, other vehicles, and changing traffic conditions. When a vehicle enters against a red signal, cross traffic often has little time to react, increasing the risk of a high-speed side-impact collision.

These crashes can be especially severe because the sides of vehicles generally provide less protection than the front or rear. The force of impact may also push vehicles into nearby objects or other traffic, creating secondary collisions. Factors commonly reviewed after intersection crashes include signal timing, vehicle positions, driver actions, roadway conditions, and witness statements. Information gathered from these sources can help provide a clearer picture of how a collision occurred and why the resulting damage and injuries were so significant.
