Why Helmet Use Is Critical in Moped and Scooter Crashes
Mopeds and scooters offer limited protection compared to enclosed vehicles. In a crash, riders are exposed to direct impact with the roadway or other vehicles. Head injuries are among the most serious risks in these types of accidents.
Helmets are designed to absorb some of the force during a collision and reduce the likelihood of traumatic brain injury. Even at moderate speeds, a sudden stop or side-impact crash can cause riders to be thrown from the vehicle.
Busy tourist areas like Waikiki often have heavy traffic and frequent turns at intersections. Drivers and riders alike must stay alert. Wearing protective gear and following traffic laws can help reduce the severity of injuries in the event of a crash.
