Why Train-Vehicle Collisions Often Result in Severe Outcomes
Train collisions with other vehicles often result in serious consequences due to the size and weight of trains. Trains require a long distance to come to a stop, even after the operator applies the brakes. This makes it difficult to avoid a collision once a vehicle is on the tracks.
Vehicles may become stuck or unable to move off the tracks quickly. Limited visibility, crossing angles, and track elevation can also affect driver awareness. Some crossings may not have gates, increasing the risk of vehicles entering the tracks at unsafe times.
The force of a train’s impact can push a vehicle a long distance. This can make locating the vehicle more difficult and increase the severity of damage and injuries.
