Risks for Pedestrians Assisting Disabled Vehicles on Roadways
Stopping to help a disabled vehicle can place a person in a dangerous position, especially on busy or high-speed roads. Passing drivers may not expect someone to be outside a vehicle, which can reduce reaction time and increase the chance of a crash.
Limited visibility, poor lighting, or weather conditions can make it harder for drivers to see someone on or near the roadway. Even during daylight, vehicles traveling at higher speeds may not be able to stop in time. Standing too close to active traffic lanes also increases risk.
When possible, moving vehicles should be fully off the roadway, and hazard lights should be used to alert others. Maintaining a safe distance from traffic and remaining aware of your surroundings can help reduce the risk of injury in such situations.
