Watertown, SD (April 14, 2026) – Two drivers were hurt in a late-night crash on Sunday, April 13, near U.S. Highway 212 and 464th Avenue in Watertown. The collision happened around midnight under heavy fog and low visibility conditions.
Emergency units arrived to find a four-door sedan with moderate rear damage and a three-quarter-ton pickup truck towing a flatbed trailer with significant damage. During the crash, one of the vehicles struck a utility pole, causing power lines to fall and block part of 464th Avenue near the highway.
Both drivers were able to walk away from the scene and were reported to have minor, non-life-threatening injuries. No additional details about the individuals involved have been released at this time.
The crash remains under investigation. We extend our thoughts to those injured and wish them a full recovery.
What Factors Can Contribute to Crashes in Low Visibility Conditions?
Low visibility can make it harder for drivers to judge distance, speed, and road conditions. Fog, in particular, reduces how far ahead a driver can see and may hide other vehicles or obstacles until it is too late to react safely.
When visibility drops, drivers may not adjust their speed enough to match conditions. Following too closely or failing to use headlights properly can increase the chance of a collision. Wet or damp roads can also affect braking distance, adding another layer of risk.
Roadway features such as intersections or areas with limited lighting may become even more difficult to navigate in these conditions. Staying alert and maintaining a safe distance between vehicles can help reduce the chances of a crash when visibility is poor.
