Wharton, NJ (April 15, 2026) – A driver was killed following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 in Wharton on Wednesday morning, prompting an ongoing investigation by New Jersey State Police.
The crash occurred around 8:08 a.m. on the westbound I-80 near milepost 34.5 in Morris County.
According to investigators, the collision began when an Audi SUV struck the rear of a Subaru SUV traveling westbound. The impact caused the Subaru to veer off course and hit a guardrail.
Authorities say the Audi continued forward and collided with a Pontiac passenger vehicle, which was then pushed into a Chevrolet SUV, resulting in a four-vehicle chain reaction crash.
The driver of the Subaru sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead as a result of the crash. Officials have not yet released the victim’s identity. Emergency crews responded to the scene to assist those involved and manage traffic in the area.
New Jersey State Police are actively investigating the incident and are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or events leading up to it to come forward. The crash remains under investigation, and additional details may be released as they become available.
We extend our condolences to the victim’s family.
How Chain-Reaction Crashes Can Escalate Quickly on Highways
Chain-reaction crashes often begin with a single impact but can quickly involve multiple vehicles.
Highway speeds and close following distances increase the likelihood of secondary collisions.
Once a vehicle is pushed out of control, it can strike additional cars, leading to more severe outcomes.
