Why Hit-and-Run Crashes Present Unique Challenges for Investigators
Hit-and-run crashes usually require investigators to piece together information from multiple sources when the driver leaves before being identified. Witness statements, vehicle debris, surveillance footage, and physical evidence found on the roadway can all help establish what occurred.
When a vehicle is believed to be involved but has not yet been located, investigators frequently focus on identifying its make, model, color, and any visible damage. Information gathered from nearby businesses, homes, or traffic cameras may provide additional leads.
Cases involving pedestrians or wheelchair users frequently include a detailed review of roadway conditions, lighting, and visibility. These factors can help explain how the collision occurred and assist investigators in reconstructing the sequence of events. As additional evidence becomes available, a clearer picture of the circumstances may emerge.
