How Rural Highway Intersections Can Increase Crash Risk
Rural highway intersections can be especially dangerous due to higher travel speeds and limited traffic control features. Drivers may have less time to react when crossing or entering major roadways from smaller side roads.
Visibility can also play a role, particularly when judging the speed and distance of oncoming vehicles. Even in clear weather conditions, timing miscalculations at intersections can lead to severe side-impact collisions.
When a smaller passenger vehicle is struck by a large commercial truck, the difference in size and weight often increases the severity of the crash. Investigators typically examine vehicle paths, speed, and roadway layout when determining how these collisions occur.
