Chain-Reaction Crashes on Busy Highways
Multi-vehicle crashes often occur when traffic suddenly slows or stops on heavily traveled highways. Drivers approaching congestion may not have enough time to react, especially during periods of high traffic volume. Rear-end impacts can quickly involve several vehicles when cars are traveling close together.
Backups caused by earlier accidents frequently increase the risk of secondary collisions. Investigators reviewing these crashes may look at the following distance, braking patterns, and traffic speed leading up to the impact. Weather, visibility, and roadway design can also affect how quickly drivers can respond to changing traffic conditions. Even relatively minor impacts can lead to injuries when several vehicles become involved in a chain-reaction crash.
