Seat Belt Use and Injury Severity in Two-Car Crashes
Two-car crashes can lead to serious or fatal injuries when the force of impact causes a person to be thrown from a vehicle. Ejection greatly increases the risk of death because the person loses the protection of the vehicle cabin. Seat belts help keep drivers and passengers inside the vehicle during a collision.
Rural roads can also create added risks because vehicles may travel at higher speeds and emergency access may take longer. Curves, narrow shoulders, and limited lighting can affect how a crash scene is handled.
After a serious crash, medical teams often check surviving occupants for head trauma, broken bones, and internal injuries. Even one collision can cause different injury outcomes for the people involved, depending on seat belt use, impact angle, and vehicle damage.
