Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes multi-vehicle crashes like this one?
Chain-reaction crashes on freeways commonly start with one vehicle slowing or stopping unexpectedly, followed by following vehicles unable to react in time. Heavy traffic, lane changes and following too closely are frequent contributors.
How does speed affect the severity of a crash like this?
Higher speeds reduce the time a driver has to react and increase the force of impact. Even a modest increase in speed can turn a minor collision into one with serious injuries.
Why is distracted driving a particular risk on freeways?
At freeway speeds, a driver who looks away for even a few seconds can travel a significant distance without reacting to a slowdown or stopped traffic ahead, making rear-end and chain-reaction crashes more likely.
Do weather or road conditions typically play a role in freeway crashes?
Wet pavement, debris or reduced visibility can affect stopping distance and vehicle control, though investigators determine on a case-by-case basis whether conditions contributed to a specific crash.
