Wilmer, AL (March 1, 2026) – Two people were killed early on Saturday morning, February 28, following a multi-vehicle crash involving an SUV and multiple tractor-trailers on Alabama 158 in Mobile County, according to authorities.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reported that the crash occurred around 1:36 a.m. on Alabama 158 near Wilmer Georgetown Road, approximately six miles west of Semmes. Investigators say an SUV traveling along the roadway collided head-on with a tractor-trailer.

The driver of the SUV, identified as 57-year-old Daphne Peters of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and her passenger, 58-year-old Dexter Magee of Collins, Mississippi, were both ejected from the vehicle. Authorities confirmed neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Shortly after the initial collision, a second tractor-trailer struck the first commercial truck involved in the crash. The drivers of both tractor-trailers were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been released.

The roadway remained closed for more than seven hours as crews worked to recover vehicles and investigators processed the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Our thoughts are with the families of the victims who lost their lives, and we wish the injured drivers a swift recovery as they receive medical care.

Why Multi-Vehicle Highway Crashes Often Turn Deadly

Highway crashes involving commercial vehicles frequently result in severe outcomes due to the size and weight difference between passenger vehicles and tractor-trailers. Head-on impacts, especially at highway speeds, leave little room for survival.

When occupants are ejected, the risk of fatal injury increases significantly. Investigators typically examine vehicle positioning, speed, restraint use, and roadway conditions to determine how these crashes unfold and whether contributing factors played a role.
