Wilton, NH (March 4, 2026) – A woman died, and a man was seriously injured, on Wednesday, March 4, in a house fire on Burns Hill Road in Wilton. Firefighters responded at 9:08 a.m. after a caller reported smoke filling the home.
When crews arrived, they found a single-family home actively on fire and discovered two residents still inside on the second floor. Both were rescued and taken to Elliott Hospital due to significant smoke inhalation. The adult female later died, while the adult male remains in serious condition.
Investigators from the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office are leading the investigation. Officials are examining whether a recent power outage may have contributed to the fire. The blaze is not considered suspicious.
Firefighters from Wilton and surrounding towns, along with local ambulance services, assisted at the scene. No first responders were injured. The incident remains under review by authorities. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
How Residential Fires Can Impact Occupants
Fires in single-family homes can spread rapidly, especially when smoke fills upper floors. Smoke inhalation is a leading cause of injury and death, as it can occur before flames reach residents.
Mutual aid from nearby fire departments often helps control large or fast-moving fires. Early detection and quick evacuation are critical to saving lives.
Investigators examine electrical systems, appliances, and other potential ignition sources to determine the origin of a fire. Power outages, faulty wiring, and heating equipment are common factors reviewed during such investigations.
