Franklin County, MO (July 8, 2026) – A 79-year-old Union woman was hurt in a three-vehicle crash on Missouri Route 47 near the 7727 block on Monday, July 6. The collision was reported at 10:37 a.m.

A distracted 36-year-old Rolla man driving a 2020 Freightliner failed to keep a proper lookout and struck the rear of a 2003 Saturn Ion driven by the 79-year-old woman. The impact pushed her vehicle into the path of a northbound 2015 Toyota Tacoma driven by a 39-year-old Poplar Bluff man.

The woman sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Mercy Hospital South by ambulance. The drivers of the Freightliner and Tacoma were not hurt. All three vehicles were towed from the scene. The accident remains under active review.

We hope the injured woman makes a full recovery.

What Happens When a Distracted Commercial Driver Causes a Chain-Reaction Crash?

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of rear-end crashes, and the consequences are amplified when the distracted driver is operating a large commercial vehicle. A Freightliner truck carries significantly more mass than a passenger car, meaning the force transferred to a smaller vehicle upon impact is far greater than in a typical car-to-car collision. That force can push the struck vehicle well beyond its original position, as happened here when the Saturn was driven into oncoming traffic.

When an older driver is involved in a crash, the absence of a safety device increases the risk of serious injury substantially. Seatbelts are especially important for older occupants, whose bones and soft tissue are generally more vulnerable to trauma than those of younger people. Even a moderate-speed rear-end impact can cause significant harm to an unrestrained older driver.

Investigators who determine that distraction caused a crash typically document that finding through witness statements, any available camera footage, and the driver’s own account. In crashes involving commercial vehicles, electronic logging device data and any onboard camera systems may also be reviewed to understand what the driver was doing in the moments before the collision.
