Brooklyn, NY (July 23, 2026) – A 45-year-old woman riding a standup electric scooter died after a dump truck struck her at Franklin Avenue and Pacific Street in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, according to police. Melba Jordan was riding north on Franklin Avenue around 11 a.m. on Tuesday when the truck, heading south, turned right onto Pacific Street and hit her.

She was taken to Kings County Hospital in critical condition but could not be saved. The 68-year-old truck driver was not hurt and remained at the scene. No charges had been filed as of this report. Investigators continue to look into the wreck.

Our condolences go out to Jordan’s family and loved ones.

Why Are E-Scooters Especially Vulnerable in Turning-Vehicle Crashes?

Turning trucks and larger vehicles have significant blind spots along their sides and rear corners, areas that can hide someone on a scooter or bicycle until it’s too late to react. This blind spot is especially large on vehicles like dump trucks, which sit higher off the ground than a typical car.

Standup scooters also travel closer to the height of a vehicle’s wheels and lower body panels, rather than the driver’s eye level, making a rider harder to spot compared to another car or pedestrian. Riders moving through an intersection at the same time a large vehicle turns face particular risk, since the truck’s path can sweep through space the rider assumed was clear.

Cities have increasingly looked at turn signal timing, protected intersections, and blind-spot mirrors on larger vehicles as ways to reduce these incidents. Riders are also encouraged to make eye contact with drivers and avoid riding directly alongside a turning vehicle whenever possible.
