Why Pedestrian Crashes Involving Large Trucks Can Be Especially Serious
Collisions involving pedestrians and large commercial vehicles often result in severe injuries due to the size and weight difference between the truck and individuals on foot. Even at low speeds, the limited visibility zones around large trucks can make it difficult for drivers to see people crossing nearby.
Intersections with multiple traffic phases and heavy pedestrian activity can increase risk, particularly when timing changes during a crossing movement. Crosswalk supervision and signal coordination are key factors in managing pedestrian flow in busy urban areas.
Investigators reviewing these incidents typically examine signal timing, vehicle positioning, sightlines, and witness accounts. These details help establish how the sequence of events unfolded and whether any operational or environmental factors contributed to the crash.
