Wonder Lake, IL (May 18, 2026) – One person is dead, and two others were hospitalized following a home explosion in Wonder Lake on Sunday night. The incident occurred around 7:50 p.m. on May 17, in the 7400 block of Birch Drive near Wonder Lake Road.
Emergency units from the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District responded after reports of a house explosion. A box alarm was requested to bring additional crews and EMS support to the scene through mutual aid. Officials confirmed that one person died at the location.
Two others were injured in the blast, including a 76-year-old man and a 28-year-old man. Both were transported to Loyola University Medical Center with serious injuries, according to authorities. The identity of the person who died has not yet been released.
Neighbors reported hearing a loud explosion and seeing smoke and debris scattered through the area. Two nearby homes also sustained damage from the blast. Emergency crews continued working at the scene as investigators assessed the destruction. The incident remains under investigation by fire officials and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
