Chicago, IL (September 5, 2026) – Four people were reportedly injured in a wrong-way crash involving three vehicles early on Thursday morning, September 3, on DuSable Lake Shore Drive in downtown Chicago. The collision happened around 1:48 a.m. in the 400 block of North Lake Shore Drive.

Police said a black SUV carrying two men was traveling north in the southbound lanes when it struck a white SUV. The impact sent the white SUV into a white sedan, resulting in a three-vehicle crash. Both men in the black SUV and two adults in the white sedan were taken to hospitals.

All four were listed in serious condition, according to police. The crash occurred near the location of a bridge malfunction, but officials said the malfunction is not believed to be connected to the collision. This is a developing story.

We hope those injured recover fully and quickly.

What Makes Wrong-Way Crashes Especially Dangerous?

Wrong-way crashes can be particularly serious because vehicles may approach each other at high speeds with little time to react. A driver traveling against traffic can pose a sudden hazard to motorists following the correct direction of travel.

These crashes may happen when a driver enters a roadway through an incorrect ramp or becomes confused about traffic lanes. Poor visibility, unfamiliar roads, and impaired awareness can also contribute to drivers traveling in the wrong direction.

The severity of a wrong-way crash depends on factors such as vehicle speed, the type of vehicles involved, and where the vehicles make contact. Multiple impacts can increase the risk of serious injuries for people inside the vehicles.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
