Why Wrong-Way Highway and Road Crashes Can Be Severe
Wrong-way crashes frequently lead to serious or fatal outcomes because vehicles may meet head-on with little time for drivers to react. These collisions often occur at regular driving speeds, increasing the force when two vehicles collide.
After a wrong-way collision, investigators commonly review roadway signs, lighting, lane markings, and driver movement patterns. Video footage, witness statements, and vehicle damage can also help explain how a car entered opposing lanes of travel.
Road closures are often necessary after fatal crashes so crews can safely document evidence and remove damaged vehicles. In some cases, transportation officials later review whether additional warning signs, barriers, or traffic control measures could help reduce the chance of similar collisions in the future.
