Chandler, AZ (July 20, 2026) – A wrong-way driver caused a multi-vehicle collision on Friday evening, July 17, on eastbound Interstate 10 near Ray Road in Chandler, leaving several people hurt. Emergency units were dispatched to the freeway around 6:30 p.m. after reports of a vehicle traveling west in the eastbound lanes.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the wrong-way vehicle struck multiple cars. Several people were injured, including one person who was listed in critical condition. Investigators said impairment is suspected, though no additional details have been released.

The Arizona Department of Transportation directed eastbound motorists to exit at or before Warner Road while the freeway remained closed. Westbound traffic was not affected, and the eastbound lanes reopened overnight after the roadway examination was completed.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision, and additional information may be released as the review progresses.

Our thoughts are with everyone hurt, and we wish them a full recovery.

Why Wrong-Way Freeway Crashes Are So Severe?

Wrong-way collisions on divided highways frequently result in high-impact crashes because the vehicles are traveling toward each other at highway speeds. These situations can leave drivers with very little time to react, increasing the likelihood of serious injuries.

Investigators typically review witness reports, surveillance footage, vehicle damage, and tire marks to determine how a vehicle entered the freeway in the wrong direction. They may also examine roadway signs, entrance ramps, and lighting conditions to identify factors that contributed to the crash.

When impairment is suspected, investigators may collect additional evidence as part of the review. Those findings are considered alongside physical evidence and other information to establish a complete understanding of how the collision occurred.
