Tigard, OR (July 16, 2026) – One person was seriously hurt Tuesday afternoon, July 14, after a motorcycle struck another vehicle before the rider was thrown into the path of a pickup truck on southbound Hwy 217 near Tigard.

The crash happened shortly after 3:45 p.m. between Greenberg Rd and Hwy 99. Emergency units arrived to find the motorcyclist pinned beneath the pickup truck and worked to free the person from underneath the vehicle.

The rider was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Investigators said the motorcyclist first clipped another vehicle before being thrown from the bike into the pickup truck’s lane, where the second part of the collision occurred.

Traffic was heavily affected while crews worked at the site. The middle and right lanes of southbound Hwy 217, along with the Greenberg on-ramp to the highway, remained closed for several hours before all lanes reopened around 6:15 p.m.

The cause of the crash remains under review as investigators continue gathering information.

We hope the injured rider makes a full and speedy recovery.

Why Can Motorcycle Riders Face Greater Injury Risks in Multi-Vehicle Crashes?

Motorcycle riders have far less physical protection than people traveling inside larger vehicles. Even with proper safety gear, being thrown from a motorcycle can expose a rider to severe injuries when multiple vehicles become involved. Secondary impacts with other vehicles or the roadway often increase the seriousness of these crashes.

Investigators commonly examine factors such as lane position, traffic flow, vehicle spacing, roadway conditions, and witness statements to determine how a motorcycle crash unfolded. They may also review physical evidence, vehicle damage, and available video footage to establish the sequence of events. Because motorcycles are smaller and more difficult for other drivers to see, maintaining safe following distances and staying alert during lane changes can help reduce the likelihood of serious roadway collisions.
