According to the Oklahoma City Police, the child’s father was backing a pickup truck out of the driveway to run errands and did not realize the child had followed him outside.
The child was taken to a local hospital in critical condition but later died from injuries suffered in the driveway collision. Officials stated the incident was ruled an accident, and no arrests were made. We extend our deepest condolences to the child’s family and loved ones during this heartbreaking time.
Why Driveway Backing Incidents Can Be Especially Dangerous for Young Children
Driveway backing incidents involving young children can happen quickly because smaller children are often difficult to see from inside larger vehicles. Pickup trucks, SUVs, and vans may have wider blind spots behind the vehicle, limiting a driver’s ability to detect movement close to the rear bumper.
Children can move unpredictably and may follow adults outdoors without being noticed right away. In residential areas, driveways and parking spaces can become hazardous when drivers are preparing to leave and may not expect someone to be directly behind the vehicle.
Investigators reviewing driveway crashes often examine vehicle position, sightlines, and how the child entered the area behind the vehicle. Safety experts frequently encourage drivers to walk around a vehicle before backing up and use extra caution in residential settings where children may be nearby.
