Why Failure-to-Yield Crashes Often Occur at Intersections
Failure-to-yield collisions frequently happen when a driver enters or crosses a roadway without allowing enough space for approaching traffic. Intersections, median crossings, and turn lanes can be particularly challenging because motorists must judge vehicle speeds and available gaps before proceeding.
These types of crashes may involve side impacts, which can cause significant vehicle damage because the sides of a vehicle generally provide less protection than the front or rear. Factors such as limited visibility, driver distraction, misjudging distance, or unfamiliarity with an intersection can contribute to these roadway encounters.
Investigators typically review vehicle positions, roadway design, driver statements, and physical evidence to determine how a traffic collision unfolded. Information gathered from these reviews helps create a clearer picture of the sequence of actions leading up to the crash and may assist in identifying contributing factors.
