Spring Hill, KS (June 18, 2026) – Three people were seriously hurt after a late-night wreck involving a pickup truck and a semi-truck at the intersection of Hwy. 169 and 199th St. in Spring Hill. The roadway incident happened around 10:50 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16.
According to investigators, a 15-year-old from Spring Hill was driving a 2025 Ford F-250 southbound and was waiting in a turn lane to travel east on 199th St. The teen reportedly entered the intersection against a red light and was struck by a northbound 2025 Freightliner semi-truck traveling through the crossing.
The force of the collision sent the pickup into a ditch, while the semi overturned onto its driver’s side. Emergency units assisted the people involved and assessed injuries at the roadway.
The teen driver and a 16-year-old passenger from Olathe were both seriously injured. Investigators stated neither teen was wearing a seatbelt. The semi driver, a 63-year-old man from Reeds, was also seriously hurt and was wearing a seatbelt at the time. Investigators are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the accident and have not yet released additional findings.
Those recovering from their injuries are in our thoughts as they heal.
Why Seatbelt Use Can Affect Injury Severity in Major Truck Crashes
Seatbelts are designed to help keep vehicle occupants in a safer position during sudden stops or vehicle rollovers. In crashes involving large commercial trucks, the forces generated can be substantial because of the size and weight differences between vehicles. Proper restraint use may reduce the likelihood of occupants being thrown against interior surfaces or ejected from a vehicle.
In many serious roadway collisions, investigators review factors such as vehicle speeds, traffic signals, roadway design, driver actions, and seatbelt use. These details can help provide a clearer picture of what occurred. While seatbelts cannot prevent every injury, transportation safety studies have consistently shown that they can lower the risk of severe harm in many types of crashes, including those involving passenger vehicles and heavy trucks.
